A Simple Story That Gets The Deepest In You (ChannelnewsAsia, 8 July 2008)

SINGAPORE : Seven friends, seven stories, one ‘family’… MediaCorp’s new Malay drama “1988… Segaris Sinar” which focuses on timeless, universal themes of friendship and family is sure to tug at your heartstrings.

Boasting a stellar cast including Rafaat Hamzah, Melvinder Kanth, Nik Mikhail and Taufiq Salleh, the eight-part drama which debuted Monday on Suria, tracks the lives of seven bosom friends who grew up together in an orphanage and explores the love and camaraderie that binds them together as ‘family’.

They go their separate paths and reunite after 20 years. However, things are very different.

Constantly switching between the present (2008) and the past (1980s when they were kids), each episode sees award-winning director Sanif Olek carefully piecing together the individual stories of each member.

As they reflect on their growing up years, they realise how their problems today harks back to their days in the orphanage. But like before, they continue to gain strength from one another and seek inspiration from the glimmer of hope that their fragmented lives can offer.

“1988… Segaris Sinar” airs every Monday at 9.30pm on Suria.
